How can i install two or more versions of Bitwig Studio on one Linux machine? Aptitude (or any other package manager) doesn't permit installing two versions :(

There is a way to do this, but it may come with some unexpected downsides, among them that you need to be able to use a terminal.

Make backups before upgrading!

If you still want versions to coexist, start a terminal, obtain root and go to /opt:

 $ sudo su ; cd /opt

Copy /opt/bitwig-studio to /opt/bitwig-studio-1.0.15 (or similar)

$ cp -a bitwig-studio bitwig-studio-1.0.15

Upgrade to 1.1

 $ dpkg -i /home/USER/Downloads/bitwig-studio-1.1-BETA-5.deb

Move /opt/bitwig-studio to /opt/bitwig-studio-1.1:

 $ mv bitwig-studio bitwig-studio-1.1

Create a symbolical link to choose the active version:

 $ ln -s bitwig-studio-1.1 bitwig-studio

Leave /opt and root access by hitting CTRL-D and going home:

 $ cd ~

Make a backup of ALL your project data:

 $ cp -a Bitwig\ Studio BITWIG-BACKUPS/Bitwig\ Studio-1.0.15

Make a backup of your 1.0 cache and settings:

 $ cp -a .bitwig-studio BITWIG-BACKUPS/.bitwig-studio-1.0.15

Now you can either:

  • Start betatesting from scratch by deleting both project and cache folder
  • Upgrade by just running 1.1
  • Keep testing and stable separate by deleting the folders and symlinking to the backups like you did in /opt

To lateron change the active version, you'll have to move the symlinks, and restore your project/cache directories, too!

Don't forget the backups!
