As a user, I want to see a count of samples selected in the browser so I can select the exact number of samples desired. (I want to populate the first 40 keys on the left hand side of my keyboard.)

Why not to save all the samples you need in separate folder and then:

Sampler --> Right Mouse Button: Create new multisample --> Edit multisample

Browse for your folder with samples --> Select them all (using SHIFT+mouse or CTRL+A) and drag them all to the destination zone of your keyboard C1 ... whatever

(holding LEFT mouse button while dragging the samples and moving Mouse up or down you change the root key and each sample zone).
