I just did a "stress test" on my mac pro, osx el capitan, latest update

44100 HZ / 256 buffer on all tests / 120 bpm U-HE DIVA with same bass patch playing the same midi clip in arrangement view (looped 2 bars) then I duplicated the track until audio crackled

LOGIC PRO X 10.3.1 handled 107 tracks before audio cracking. chapeau. ABLETON LIVE 9.7.2 handled 77 tracks BITWIG 2.1.1 handled 83 tracks.

all legit software. all was identical in the 3 daws, just DIVA, no sends, no effects, nothing.

also, consider that, in case you, as myself, like to use a lot of modulators (not used on this test), ableton's maxforlive modulators are way more taxing on the cpu than bitwig's.

anyway, I've found the daws cpu meters pretty uninformative. the real deal is how many tracks you can play until audio crackles.

just try yourself and let me know the result here, I'm really curious.

Desktop: Dell Workstation Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4770S CPU @ 3.10GHz | 16 GiB RAM
Ubuntu 17.04 | Linux 4.10.0-22-lowlatency x86_64
jackd 1.9.10+20150825git1ed50c92~dfsg-2ubuntu2
BitWig 2.1.1 | Independent Plugin Host | Ardour 5.9.0-1kxstudio1
U-HE Diva 5541 | Preset: XS Forever 80

BitWig Laptop Maximum Instances:

  • 16 [128 samples]
  • 20 [256 samples]
  • 24 [512 samples]
  • 24 [1024 samples]
  • 24 [2048 samples]

BitWig Desktop Maximum Instances:

  • 54 [128 samples]
  • 68 [256 samples]
  • 80 [512 samples]
  • 84 [1024 samples]

[In general the system feels like it could be pushed a bit more]

Ardour laptop: maximum instances:

  • 14 [512 samples]

Actually my performance is pretty predictable. Diva is very expensive and I can only run about 5 instances per thread. A funny thing is how larger buffer sizes don't help in this case.

The test also confirmed my suspicion that the sweep spot for my system is a latency of 512 samples. I'd say that Ardour performance was quite more unstable that BitWig in general, and certainly in a different class, but I am not very experienced with Ardour as to say more.

thanks ej.gallego, nice alternative test! did you also compare vs another daw?

Good point, I have done a quick check with Ardour.

seems a great result! I'm curious how bitwigs scores versus cubase in a test like this! anyone?

UPDATE: New test with Bitwig 2.4 vs Logic 10.4

As in the first test, all (including buffer size and sample rate) was perfectly identical in the two projects. For this test I used some really heavy presets on U-He Diva and Waves H-Reverb and duplicated the track until the audio crackled noticeably. This time:

LOGIC PRO handled 11 tracks

BITWIG handled 5 tracks

Can't compare with Ableton as I don't have it anymore.
