We know you can layer or group instruments together into one instrument, but how are they chained together in what order? Or should I say how are they summed? For example if we add 4 instruments into the X/Y Pad Instrument how do they 'blend' together or how are they summed? - is it a form of frequency filtering, EQing or just some algorithmic magic?

It is basic summing like in a 4 channel mixer! The only difference is that all the levels are controlled by the position of the single orange dot in the xy field. If the dot sits completely in one of the corners, that channel's level is 100%, the others are silent. If yo move it around, the other "corners" will get mixed in, too, with levels according to the distance of the dot to the other corners.
